Que Farah, Farah

Today I went on a one-day trip to Farah. It's the biggest province in Afghanistan but literally has a population of fewer than one million people. Flying over it is like flying over the far side of Mars:



The airport has one dirt runway, a water tower, and a gun tower:



Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures in the "city," since I was traveling in an MRAP convoy, with a helmet and body armor. Necessary, but very uncomfortable.

  1. That looks like the greatest province in all of Afghanistan.

    In related news, it's sadly only the fourth largest province in Afghanistan. Lowest population density, though!
